Pain Without Limits

If you have not watched Snow White and the Huntsman yet, don’t. If you don’t want spoilers for this movie, don’t read this post. Come back tomorrow. Ok, now my conscience is clear.

Yesterday we all went to go see Snow White and the Huntsman. It was our entire Phoenix wing of the gaming group plus a two former gamers, Wil and Scott, and Geina, Wil’s wife. All seven of us paid up, sat down, shared snacks and watched. Several lessons were learned. One is that if you don’t like Twilight or CW, you probably will not like this movie. The other is that hipsters are writing and directing WAY too many movies. So we sat and watched. Jason almost had an epic fail in the ‘watching’ department, because he started to fall asleep. That alone should tell you something.

Afterward, we all got up. Just as I was getting ready to say “Thank all the Powers that Be it was only a matinee” Wil started talking about how much he loved it. Later, everyone else confessed that we were not fans. A lot of the things Wil liked, made us nuts.

There are a few lessons to take out of this and into gaming. One is that not everything will appeal to every player. What one loves, everyone else might not. Come to think of it, last time Wil played with me, he got my character thrown into prison for murder…

But you also have to consider Game of Thrones. The HBO series is even better than the books, thanks to brilliant acting and a dose of editing (sorry George). Everyone who has watched it has loved it. Therefore, if you have a really compelling story with great characters, complex plots and action, you should be ok. Just spot check yourself. If you can answer yes to “Would 16 year old emo hipsters love this?” then write a different game, or seek out other emo hipsters. Even they deserve an RPG… oh yeah, it’s called Vampire the Masquerade! (Sorry, I had to go there.)
